William R. Schmid
Notification of Corp. Schmid's death
Corporal William R. Schmid, 31, a member of Ashland's own Company E, died Saturday, July 11, 1942 somewhere in the southwest Pacific area under circumstances termed as "unknown" by the War Department.
Notification of Corp. Schmid's death was received yesterday by his wife, Virginia, of Ashland and his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Ernest Schmid of Polk R.D. 1 in telegrams from the office of Secretary of War Stimson.
The fact that the wording of the message states that Corp. Schmid died under "unknown" circumstances rather than "in action" leads local persons to believe that his death did not take place in actual battle, but may have been accidental or through illness.
Schmid entered service Oct. 21, 1940 when members of the National Guard were called as the first group to train for service. A member of Co. E, 145th Infantry, 37th Division.
