John E. Covert was born in Pennsylvania in 1817, and came to Ohio with his father, and settled in Ashland County. In 1847 he went to the State of New York, where he followed the carpenter and joiner’s trade nine years. He then returned to Ashland County and settled on the farm on which he now lives.
He has held the office of school director and is deeply interested in all educational matters; is a member of the Reformed Church, and in politics is a Republican. When he first began business he had only a small capital, but by industry and economy has accumulated quite a fortune and a very comfortable home. May 13, 1844, he married Esther Hanbey, of New York, and is the father of one child, James Enoch.
