John Bender was born in Pennsylvania, in 1806. He came to Ohio with his father, and in 1839 married Margaret Hauntz, of Ashland County. In 1840 he settled on the farm on which he now lives. He has held the office of supervisor several years, and is a respected member of society.
He is a member of the Reformed church, and has held the office of deacon and elder ever since St. Jacobís church was built. He is the father of eight children, of whom only five are living: Martin, who married Lydia Durk, and lives in Kansas; Elizabeth, wife of Alonzo Workman, of Holmes County, Ohio; David, John, and Francena.
