John Artz, born in Ellsos, France, in 1830, came to America in 1852 and settled in Upper Canada, where he remained two years. Then he came to Ohio and settled in Holmes County, where he remained three months, when he went to California and was there six years engaged in gold mining.
In 1861 he returned to Ohio and settled in Knox County, where he remained seven years. At the end of that time he came to Ashland County, and bought the farm on which he now lives. The offices of supervisor and school director he has filled; is a member of the Lutheran Church, in which he has been elder for two years.
In 1863, he married Elizabeth Motz, of Knox County, who had one child, and died in 1864. In 1865, he married Louisa Schauneker, of Ashland County, who has had six children. Their names are as follows: John A., who died in infancy; Gustave A., John W., Annie M., Louis P., Frederick C. and George E.
