R. D. Hurst Died From Wounds Received In Action In France
Sgt. Ralph D. Hurst died from wounds received in action Dec. 6 1944 in France, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie S. Hurst, 321 Samaritan Avenue, learned last evening in a War Department telegram.
No other details of his death are known by his relatives, who include his sisters, Jean, a Wac. Sergeant, and Martha, at home, and his brothers, Jack of Ashland and Glenn and Clifford, at home. Glenn is to be inducted Jan. 2.
Sgt. Hurst, who was employed while in school by the A. L. Garber Company, entered the Army July 12, 1943, and was assigned to Camp Fannin, Texas, for initial training. Upon its completion, he went to Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, and was transferred overseas Oct. 7 of this year. After a few days in England, Sgt. Hurst went to France.
A graduate of Ashland High School, class of 42, he attended the University of Cincinnati before entering the service.
He is the 52nd Ashland countian to die while in service.
"Bobo" as he was known, was one of Ashland High's outstanding athletes. He was All-NCO league tackle in 1941 and the year before was named on the All-league second team as a guard. He was catcher for the baseball team and in his senior year batted .343. He was a member of varsity basketball teams, playing guard.
At the University of Cincinnati, he played both football and baseball.
