Flight Officer P. A. Fickes Was Killed In A Plane Crash Somewhere In The American Theatre Of Operations.


Flight Officer Paul A. Fickes, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Fickes of Jeromesville, was killed in a plane crash Feb. 7, 1945 somewhere in the American theatre of operations. He was a Navigator of a B-24 (Liberator) bomber.
He was married Nov. 18, 1944 at the Post chapel in Charleston, S. C., Miss Betty Gerst of Toledo. Mrs. Fickes is now assistant supervisor of surgery at Robinwood hospital in Toledo.
A graduate of Jeromesville High School in 1936, he graduated in 1941 from Ohio Wesleyan University, where he took a pre-medical course. He had completed his sophomore year at Northwestern School of Medicine in Chicago when he enlisted in the Army on May 18, 1943.
He was transferred to the Air Force in June 1943 and took basic training at Miami Beach, Fla., and preflight training at Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was classified as a pilot at Santa Ana, Cal., and later was reclassified as a navigator. He took a gunnery course at Kingman, Arizona and advanced navigation at Hondo, Texas, graduating Oct. 14, 1944; He had special combat training at Charleston, S. C.
Flight Officer Fickes was a member of the Methodist church in Jeromesville. He is the 61st Ashland countian to die while in service.
