B-24 Pilot Lt. Leonard Smith Was Killed In Action Over Germany
Second Lieutenant Leonard L. Smith was killed in action over Germany on Sept. 11, 1945, his wife Anne of 307 East Tenth Street was informed yesterday. Lt. Smith was previously reported missing on that date. Word of his death came to the War Department from the German government through the International Red Cross.
Lt. Smith, who piloted a B-17, enlisted in June, 1942, at Patterson Field, Dayton, and trained at Nashville, Tenn., Maxwell Field, Ala., and Raymond Richardson Field and Turner Field, both in Georgia. He graduated at Turner Nov. 3, 1943. He was stationed in Ill., Florida and Georgia before going overseas in June 1944.
Survivors, besides his wife, are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Smith of Lucas, and his three brothers, Staff Sgt. Richard, now in Belgium, Robert of Lucas and Carleton of near Lucas. A graduate of Lucas High School, he was employed by the McCready Furniture Company of that city, but after his marriage lived in Ashland.
