Tommy Van Band and Tommy Van and his Orchestra
A Tommy Van Band Publicity Photo was taken in the late 1940s.
It and the following article appear in the History of Ashland County, Volume II by Betty Plank, Page 129.
In the first row: Gene Cole (Piano), Barbara Taylor Jones (singer), Scotty Kaylor, and (saxophones): Gene Burns, Jim McDowell and Dick "Duco" Lutz.
In the back row: George Downs Marble (trumpet), John Schaum (drums), Leo Jones (trumpet), Tommy Vanosdall (bass) cello, and Emory Wages Marble (trombone).
In the inset at the top left is also Lutz, who fronted the band.

Tommy Vanosdall recalls:NOT EVERYONE SHARED BIG BAND EUTHUSIASM
"For the big band engagements, we added an extra trumpeter and trombone player, as well as a trio consisting of Mary (Loyd), Janet Morr, and Hattie Reaser (Semple). "Sometimes we played as many as three engagements in a weekend, traveling in a bus driven by Ross Awwiler." They never went "on the road" since the musicians kept their "day" jobs. Often they return in the morning about the same time the milkmen were making their rounds. The big band enthusiasm was not shard by everyone. Some folks in Hayesville equated playing in a band as "a form of vice" and Tommy Vanosdall did receive some anonymous letters while teaching. Dancing was not allowed on campus when Vanosdall began teaching at Ashland College in 1939. There were those who thought it would not be good for the school, if he should play any local engagements. From 1941 to 1943, while Vanosdall was furthering his education at Ohio State University, Norris Fluke played bass with the band.
